A story going back 85 years!

The schooner Marie Clarisse was launched in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, in 1923. From 1923 till 1942, she was used for fishing, plying the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia seas, and then for coastal navigation from 1942 till 1974.

The Marie Clarisse arrived in St Lawrence waters in 1974, where she sank in 1976, only to be purchased by Naval Officer Alain Canuel who wanted to make a training ship out of her. He raised her from the Louise Basin mud and had her refitted at the Mailloux shipyard on Isle-aux-Coudres.

On June 19th 1977, the schooner was rechristened ‘’Marie Clarisse’’ in memory of a previous ‘’Marie Clarisse’’, built on Ile-aux-Coudres in 1908 and since then lost. This renaming helps Charlevoix’s population remember its bygone days of maritime life.

In 1978, the acting Government charged the Ministry of Cultural Affairs with establishing a Maritime Patrimony. It’s in this context that Prime Minister René Lévesque classified the Marie Clarisse as Cultural Property. Thus began a new life for the schooner. In 1983, the Marie Clarisse was purchased by the Dufour family. She was used on tourist cruises to promote La Malbaie’s prestigious Manoir Richelieu and Hôtel Tadoussac.

During 18 years, the schooner sailed the waters of the Saguenay Fjord. Spring 2001 marks one of the last marked changes in the boat’s historical bearing. La Société Loto-Québec became it’s new owner with big plans in mind for her, and invested over one million dollars refitting her.

The work took place during the winter of 2002 at the Charlevoix Maritime Museum shipyard. During the sumer of 2002, the ship totalled more than 80 cruises, all the while promoting the Charlevoix tourist region.

Finally, in the spring of 2005, the Marie Clarisse became the property of the Charlevoix Maritime Museum who now enables Québec businesses to make their friends and partners share a unique experience, filled with maritime passion and history.
